Yorkshire Terrier Grooming: How To Take Care Of Your Yorkie

By: Susan Bailey

There are many wonderful breeds of dog out there that you can choose from, but the Yorkshire Terrier is definitely a fan favorite. Not only do they tend to be very well behaved, obedient dogs, but as well they are absolutely adorable. They make for great family pets because when they are properly trained they are gentle and loving, even around children.

This in turn is going to largely affect how they interact with other dogs as well as with people, and so it is a significant part of raising them in general. It is a very good idea to introduce or socialize your dog to professional grooming at a very early age, so that they become used to it and learn to actually enjoy it rather than dread it. Also remember that grooming a Yorkshire Terrier really depends on whether you have a pet or show quality Yorkie as this will determine how frequently you are going to have to groom them.

Bathing is a very important part of Yorkshire Terrier grooming. Especially if you keep their coat long, you are going to want to bathe your Yorkie on a regular basis. At least once every two weeks is a good idea. When bathing your Yorkie you want to make sure that you use soap and warm water and make sure that you do not get soap in their eyes. The best idea is to use a shampoo that is specifically designed to be gentle on the eyes just in case you do accidentally get a bit in their eyes.

There are a few important processes that are going to have to be included in your Yorkshire Terrier grooming such as bathing, brushing and teeth cleaning. Bathing should be done at least a couple times a month, more of course if they dirty themselves. Brushing should be done on a much more regular basis, even daily if you can find the time. Brushing is very important because Yorkies tend to have longer coats of fur that can get easily tangled if not kept up.

Brushing their teeth is another important aspect to Yorkshire Terrier grooming and this is especially important because Yorkies are subject to excessive tarter buildup on their teeth. You should be brushing their teeth on a regular basis, at least once to twice a week, and flossing is also recommended. This is one part of grooming that pet owners often do not feel comfortable doing themselves, and if this is true in your case then know that you can always take them into the veterinarian for their teeth cleaning.

Yorkshire Terrier grooming is a lot more important than you may think. Even though Yorkies are a small dog breed they require regular and thorough grooming because of the long silky coat. If your dog is simply a pet and does not compete in dog shows a Yorkshire Terrier hair cut is very appropriate.

If you are the lazy type or just do not feel comfortable with this, then it is really just a simple matter of taking them in to your veterinarian or finding a mobile pet grooming company that will actually come out to your house and groom your dog for you.

Of course you will have to pay a fee for this but it will be more than worth it to have your dog properly groomed. This will actually add years to their life and keep your companion with you for that much longer.
