Tennessee Expands Health Insurance Program To Help Residents

With a weak national economy, health officials in Tennessee are offering some residents health insurance coverage who are working fewer hours of have lost their jobs.

The state health insurance program, CoverTN, will now offer health insurance plans for residents who lost their jobs in the last six months and worked at least one 20-hour week since their job loss, reported the Memphis Commercial Appeal.

Eligible residents for CoverTN health insurance must also have earned less than $43,000 annually at their most recent job, wrote the article. "We recognize the downturn in the economy and businesses looking at layoffs and having to close," said director of CoverTN, Stephani Ryan.

The Tennessee residents that qualify for the plan, will have to pay two thirds of the premium. If the resident is a non smoker and normal wight, between the age of 30-39, their part would be $95 a month. Although this state subsidized plan will help numerous resident with acquiring more affordable insurance, critics of the CoverTN program say the coverage is limited.

The benefits for CoverTN are capped at $25,000, which means major medical coverage is virtually non-existent. That's not enough coverage, argues Tony Garr from the Tennessee Health Campaign. "If you were looking for insurance for your home, would you buy insurance that would only replace your bathroom if your home were demolished?" asked Garr.
