Small Bathroom Remodeling Ideas

By: Steve Gee

Are you remodeling a small bathroom?

Are you dreaming about a sparkling new bathroom but you just don't have enough room in your toilet? Think again because you might yet achieve ceramic perfection.

Spend time designing and become one with your bathroom

Before you write off the idea completely why not sit down with a few sheets of square graph paper and try out a few different ideas. Measure your bathroom accurately then draw it to scale on square paper so that you can see exactly where everything is.

When you are happy with the drawing of your current bathroom you should be very familiar with the size and shape of it. You will also have found all the awkward places that you will need to accomodate. You are now ready to begin designing your new bathroom layout.

You now need to draw just the outline of your bathroom ready to fit your new fixtures into it. Use a new sheet of graph paper square and be as accurate as you were with the fist drawing. On a different sheet of squared paper draw accurate scale outlines of the fixtures you would like to put in it.

Cut out the shapes that you've drawn and try to arrange them on the outline of your bathroom. Because you only have a small bathroom you might need to be creative, especially if you want to get more into your new bathroom than you had in your old one.

An example of a small bathroom remodeling project

I recently remodeled my own small bathroom to make it more inviting and to add a shower cubicle to the room so that we didn't have to shower in the bath. The remodeling ideas all started when I dropped something into the bath tub and cracked it. I wasn't popular for doing that and I wasn't looking forward to the project but I love it to bits now it's done.

Here are some ideas that you might find helpful

The ideas listed below are intended to start you thinking of different and creative solutions to the problem of remodeling your small bathroom.

The radiator doesn't have to be low down

Putting the radiator high on a wall could be an easy way to free some space at ground level.

Centralise the bathtub

Don't limit your thinking to having the bath along a wall. Placing it in the centre of the room could solve some problems if wall space is a premium.

Keep playing with your cut-outs

Test different arrangements using your squared paper cut-outs. Test as many combinations as you can think of. Don't force it though, be relaxed about it and the ideas will come.

Use a shaped shower cubicle

If you are of small to average build then you probably don't need the space that a square or rectangular shower cubicle provides. Installing a cubicle with a rounded quadrant can save a surprising amount of space in the bathroom and make it look nicer too.

Door with slide action opening

A door that slides sideways flush with the wall or even into the wall itself can save a lot of space inside your bathroom.

Mirrors

Putting mirrors on the walls won't make the bathroom bigger but it will make look as if it's bigger and that can make a big difference.

Storage space

Providing plenty of storage space up high means that the floor won't get cluttered with cosmetics, towels and cleaning materials.
