Poodle Hybrids: Otherwise Called Mixed Breed Poodles

By: Lisa A Collins

There is a surprising new trend rocking the dog world, the trend is called designer dogs. Some people might think that with a name like designer dogs the animals are the crme-of the-crme, the most perfect example of a dog that can be found, this assumption would be wrong. A designer dog is actually the combination of at least two different breeds of dogs, resulting in the creation of a whole new breed.

It doesn't matter what the breed combination is, dog owners can't get enough of them. Mixed poodle breeds are among the most popular designer dogs currently on the market. The irony is that it was only a few years ago that dog breeders would have been horrified at the idea of combining two different dog breeds. On the rare occasions that this did happen the breeders knew that there was very little chance that they would be able to sell the crossbred puppies, the best they could hope for was that they would be able to give the puppies away.

Many dog owners found that the mixed breed poodle puppies were considerably cheaper then the purebred versions, for many dog owners this was all the motivation they needed to try the new breed. Some of the dog owners had developed allergies and the many of the designer dogs were hypoallergenic or at the very least didn't shed.

Another owner might tell you that they decided to purchase the mixed breed puppy because of its hair coat, the hybrid dog didn't shed or maybe they weren't allergic to it. Some owners like the idea that by combining two breeds of dogs, the Poodle and something else, they were able to get the best of both breeds' temperaments.

Other dog owners worried their favorite breed of dog wasn't suitable for children, combining two different breeds meant they had a dog with a more tolerant temperament. Many dog owners were surprised to find the mixed breed poodle was healthier then a purebred dog. Combining the breeds eliminated some of the illnesses that plagued the breeds. Many dog lovers who've bought or rescued a mixed breed poodle profess that the dog is the best one they've ever owned. Mixed breed Poodles come in a variety of styles, sizes and colors, many of them have wavy or curly coats.

If you have never before owned a Poodle mix there are something's you should consider before rushing to the nearest breeder and bringing home a puppy. The first is to really thing about the types of breeds involved in the breeding. Every single breed of dog has some wonderful characteristics, just like every single breed of dog has some traits that aren't so desirable.

Gather as much information about both breeds as possible. Puppies don't necessarily receive equal shares of the genetic pool, some pups pick up more traits from one side of the family then they do from the other. Talk to people who already own the same type of mixed breed Poodle that you are considering purchasing, ask if you can spend some time visiting with their dog. If you have concerns talk to your puppy's breeder.

Spend time talking to your puppies breeder. Ask lots of questions, find out what attracted the owner to the mixed breed poodle combination in the first place, and find out what they have learned from spending time not only with the designer breed but also with your future puppies' parents. Get to know both of the puppy's parent's. You want to look for a puppy that has two parents with wonderful temperaments. The most important thing to remember when purchasing a mixed breed Poodle puppy is to be confident. If you have any reservations at all don't bring the puppy home.
