A Quick Look At The iPod

By: Darren Weyandt

Are you part of the iPod generation or does the name mean absolutely nothing to you? Are you confounded by the flashing little boxes that seems to be hanging from the hips of the young and old alike? If this is so, then you are probably not yet acquainted with the iPod. But you should be.

The iPod is a portable device created by Apple Inc to allow the user to listen to music, watch videos, and carry files wherever they go. Since its original incarnation, the iPod has changed size, colour, and platform, adding many different applications to its repertoire. So what are these exactly?

In most incarnations, the iPod is a portable device with a rechargeable battery already installed. It has a set amount of memory, the price of the iPod chosen increasing with the amount of memory you require. Using a touch wheel, you are able to select your music to listen to. You are also able to store files on all of the iPods to allow you to transfer them from one place to another.

The iPod has appeared in many different incarnations since it first came out. There is the smallest incarnation, which is the iPod nano, this rectangular shaped iPod is generally only for your music as it has no screen, but fits perfectly upon your belt. Similarly, there are other versions such as the iPod mini which is larger and has a screen, but also has an attachment for your belt. Finally, the newest and largest forms of the iPod are the iPod Touch and the I-Phone.

The iPod touch is a version which has a touch screen almost the entire size of the machine itself. This allows for you to watch the music videos and movies on your touch with a much bigger and better screen. And then to the I-Phone. Apple having teamed up with 3G have now created a phone which allows you to have all the benefits of an iPod, combined with phone benefits, and also the ability to easily connect with the internet and instantly download music, movies, and applications from the Apple, iTunes one store.
